Turtle Care

Turtle care can be a challenging, and equally rewarding task. Turtles need customized habitats, special breed-specific diets, enough sunlight (or an alternative UV radiation source) and constant monitoring on their health.

Finding the right vet is not always an easy task. Look for a vet that specializes in exotic pets and reptiles. Ask fellow turtle owners for referrals, or ask your local vet if they know of a reliable colleague who is an expert in the field.

To become a good owner of turtles, you need to gather as much information as possible about turtles in general, and about the particular species of turtles that you're looking for in particular. Read as much as you can, on Turtles-Hub.com, as well as on other websites. Don't settle for online resources alone. There is good literature about turtles out there, so please do get a few good books on the subject.

Please never buy wild turtles, as wild animals should not be captivated to become pets. Many of them suffer immensely in the process of being captivated and transferred to future owners. Many turtles die in the process and those that survive are often weak, stressed and prone to disease. Find a reputable breeder of turtles and have him or her mentor you in the ways of turtle care. A good mentor can be crucial to the life and well-being of your turtle!

Turtles are territorial animals. Keeping more than one turtle is certainly an option, but please remember to provide adequate living space for your turtles. Crowding two turtles or more into small living quarters can result in fighting and injuries to the turtles.
